Faith is a senior completing her honors B.A. in Psychology (clinical track) at the City University of New York Hunter College. Throughout her undergraduate journey, Faith has worked as a research assistant in two labs, including the Miranda Lab at Hunter College, where she conducted research on environmental factors that contribute to suicidality in children and adolescents, and the Schiller Lab at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital, where she examined transdiagnostic social deficits of borderline personality disorder (BPD), avoidant personality disorder, and social anxiety disorder. Under the supervision of Dr. Joseph Lao at Hunter College, Faith completed an honors thesis that investigated the effects of parental invalidation and boundary violations on the development of BPD features, codependency, and maladaptive attachment styles. Broadly speaking, Faith’s research interests include examining etiological factors, relational outcomes, self-regulatory strategies, and comorbidities of BPD. Outside of academics, Faith has also gained clinical experience as a crisis counselor at the national Crisis Text Line, a creative arts therapy intern in the inpatient psychiatric unit at Lenox Hill Hospital, and a group facilitator at Emotions Matter, Inc., a nonprofit BPD advocacy organization.
Faith aspires to earn a doctorate in clinical psychology to become a practicing psychologist. Her long-term goal is to return to her home country, Malaysia, to innovate the field of psychology as it remains underdeveloped, underrepresented, and stigmatized. As an aspiring pioneer in Malaysia’s mental health industry, Faith is passionate about reshaping public perceptions of mental health through advocacy, improving mental health access for underserved communities, enhancing educational programs for prospective clinicians, and conducting community research that may further understanding of the local mental health landscape. Ultimately, Faith aims to establish the first clinic in her home state, Sarawak, that specializes in BPD treatments, with the long-term prospect of expanding her services nationwide.
